Alster – Jugend – Segelclub e.V.
Alster – Jugend – Segelclub e.V. (AJuS) is a non-profit youth sailing club on the Outer Alster in Hamburg, based at Fährdamm 12. The club operates a jetty and a training fleet of Optimist, Teeny, 420er and Conger boats, accompanied by two motorboats. It offers holiday courses for children and young people aged 8 to 14 as well as regular weekday youth training, including an introduction to racing and the Jugendsegelschein exam. A core aim is access to sailing for all income groups; the club welcomes school sport, social institutions and disability sport and was founded on 15 July 2000.
History
Alster – Jugend – Segelclub e.V. was founded on 15 July 2000 by committed Hamburg citizens. The club is recognised as non-profit by the Hamburg tax office and is a member of the German Sailing Federation, the Hamburg Sailing Association and the Hamburg Sports Federation. Under section 2 of its statutes, AJuS promotes sailing especially for children, young people and adults without access to established sailing institutions. Integrating children and young people from low-income families is a particular concern. On the Outer Alster the club built beginner and advanced courses, holiday-pass offers, access for school sport and social institutions, and disability sport. Parents of Optimist and Teeny sailors can sail in separate courses; helpers doing boat maintenance sail free of charge. Funding and sponsors keep fees affordable; special courses run as project weeks for schools and groups. Today the club offers Optimist and Teeny holiday courses and weekly youth training and continues to improve facilities and programmes.
