Åsane Seilforening
Åsane Seilforening is an active sailing club in Bergen and one of the leading clubs in the region for children's and youth boat classes. The club is based on the island of Storøen in Eidsvåg on the Byfjorden and offers a boathouse, quay, dinghy ramp and a developing sailing sports centre with clubhouse. The programme covers dinghy and boardsailing with classes such as Optimist, ILCA, 29er and Open Bic, plus recruitment weekends, Wednesday racing and the traditional Neglespretten regatta. Training, youth development and international results – including Optimist championships and WASZP Games – shape club life under the motto Seilglede for alle (sailing joy for everyone).
History
Åsane Seilforening is now based on Storøen in Eidsvåg. Previously the club used outdoor areas at Våganeset and for a time facilities of the Njørd kayak club. After close cooperation with Bergen og Omegn Friluftsråd, the club secured a 50-year lease on parts of the large boat halls with quay and the main house on the island. The first season from Storøen was 2012; by autumn 2015 the youth group had over 40 active young sailors. Storøen itself has a long history: separated from Åstveit farm in 1816, extensively built up from 1872 by tenant Rasmuss Gerhard Evjen, bought in 1916 by shipowner Adolf Andersen and acquired on 31 December 1919 by Bergens Seilforening for 60,000. Bergens Seilforening used the island as a boat base until 1956, then sold it for 120,000 to the City of Bergen. During World War II Storøen was occupied; buildings and boats were damaged. Åsane Seilforening is restoring the old main house (origins around 1750/1817) and developing the sailing centre: new dinghy ramp in 2017, roof and walls of the boat hall renewed in winter 2022/2023, warm changing rooms and a teaching room. Sportingly the club has qualified Optimist sailors for Nordic, European and World Championships in 2024, won the U15 LagCup, took silver at SailGP Inspire in San Francisco and gold at the WASZP Games in 2023 and 2025. Sparebankstiftelsen SR-Bank supported the safety-boat fleet. The traditional Neglespretten regatta is among the club's major events; Byfjordtrimmen and recruitment weekends shape the annual programme.
