Aarhus Sejlklub
Aarhus Sejlklub is one of Denmark's oldest sailing clubs, located on Kystpromenaden in Aarhus Ø directly on Aarhus Bay. The club brings together youth, sailing school, J/70 sports boats, larger dinghies and racing divisions as well as the keelboat department with its boat station in the marina. With a clubhouse, dinghy house, moorings, guest-sailor services and a broad training and regatta programme, the club welcomes children from around seven years of age, juniors and adults. Key areas include youth development in Optimist and 29er, club sailing in H-Boat and OK Dinghy, and international events such as Sailing Aarhus Week. Since its founding as Aarhusbugtens Sejlklub in 1879, the club has been a cornerstone of East Jutland's sailing community and has produced several Olympic sailors.
History
Founded under the original name Aarhusbugtens Sejlklub on 27 July 1879, the club followed a series of regattas that began in 1866 and a decisive race on 27 February 1878 that led to a founding general meeting. The constitutive assembly took place on 27 July 1880 with manufacturer Alexius Leth as the first chairman. In 1902 the name was changed to Aarhus Sejlklub. In 1909 the Jydsk Sejl-Union was formed as an association of East Jutland clubs including Aarhus Sejlklub. The 1911 club purpose emphasised cruising on Aarhus Bay, regular sailing, regattas, training boats, mooring facilities and a club ship. Aarhus Yachtklub split off in 1930; Samvirkende Søsportsklubber in Aarhus was established in 1932. On 1 January 1957 Sejlklubben Varna merged into Aarhus Sejlklub. A new clubhouse opened in 1967 and the current Restaurant Koch in 1979 for the centenary, when the club had 320 members and 71 boats. In 1998 Aarhus Sejlklub merged with Aarhus Yachtklub. Sejlklubben Bugten, Aarhus had existed since 1913 after a split from Aarhusbugtens Sejlklub and developed its own harbour infrastructure. Today Aarhus Sejlklub remains one of Denmark's most historic sailing clubs with youth, sailing school, J/70, storjoller and keelboat activities at the boat station in Aarhus marina.
