Based in Bern, the club has supported sailors and motorboat skippers on the world's oceans since 1955 and has around 6,000 members. Its offer includes training and further education courses, the issue of the Swiss offshore certificate (Hochseeausweis) and cruises on a fleet of club-owned sailing and motor yachts. Regional groups throughout Switzerland, youth cruises and interest groups such as Swiss Racing Sailors shape active club life. Safety at sea and recognised training standards are at the heart of club policy.

History

The Cruising Club of Switzerland CCS has successfully and competently represented sailors and motorboat skippers on the world's oceans since 1955. With around 6,000 members it is one of Switzerland's largest yacht clubs and, in offshore yacht sailing, one of the most important negotiating partners for domestic and foreign authorities, institutions and organisations. The CCS sees itself as an internationally recognised Swiss centre of excellence for offshore yacht sailing under the Swiss flag. Over the decades the club has built a recognised training programme covering courses for the offshore certificate, marine radio, radar, meteorology, electronic navigation, ship handling and astronavigation. In parallel the CCS maintains a fleet of club-owned sailing and motor yachts under the Swiss flag for practical training, demanding navigation and holidays at sea; one sailing yacht is based in the Mediterranean, others operate in more northerly cruising grounds. Organisationally the club comprises a general assembly, central board, management team and general secretariat in Bern as well as numerous regional and interest groups. The Safety First section, skipper charter and training programmes for skippers and instructors underline the club's safety culture.
