Salerno, Italien

History

Club Velico Salernitano was founded on 11 November 1983 by seven young sea and sailing enthusiasts, then a little over thirty years old, at the Malinconico notary office in Salerno as a non-political, non-profit association. According to the statutes, the aim was to spread and support nautical disciplines, especially sailing, and to take part in competitions. The seven founders formed the first board: Alberto D'Anna (president), Domenico Fasano (vice-president), Luciano Pellecchia (secretary), Francesco Cefalo (treasurer), David Benbow (sport), Giuseppe Gallo and Giuseppe De Falco (assistants). In 1984 the club obtained the concession for areas in the Masuccio Salernitano harbour, then neglected and without infrastructure; the first club base was a used caravan. Since then the club has established itself on the Gulf of Salerno, runs a sailing school with Optimist, offshore and mini-offshore courses, and hosts regattas including the zonal Optimist team selection and the Italian Este 24 championship. According to the latest FIV ranking, the club's sailing school is second in the province of Salerno, sixth regionally and the first city club. Today, with clubhouse, pontoons and a broad course and event programme, it is a fixture of Salerno's sailing scene.
