Real Club de Regatas de Cartagena
Real Club de Regatas de Cartagena is a historic sailing and marina club at Cartagena's Puerto Deportivo on the Mediterranean in the Region of Murcia. The club offers marina berths, a boatyard with a crane for vessels up to 15 tonnes, a sailing school, a waterfront apron for dinghies and rowing, and a clubhouse with social lounge, restaurant, gym, terraces and swimming pool. Its programme includes youth and adult courses in Optimist and ILCA, cruiser sailing, rowing, kayak, dragon boat and sport fishing, plus many regattas from dinghy racing to offshore events such as Cartagena–Ibiza. Formally founded in 1905, with roots in harbour racing since 1858, the club remains a cornerstone of Cartagena's nautical culture with modern facilities at the marina.
History
The first regattas in Cartagena harbour are recorded in 1858. Amid Cartagena's cultural and maritime rise in the 19th century, the idea of a racing club took shape; the decisive push for formal founding came in 1905 from young locals led by Adalberto Spottorno. Between 1906 and 1909 the club acquired boats and set up temporary premises on Muelle Alfonso XII. In 1907 the royals visited and accepted honorary presidency; the first official regattas followed with local and national entries. In 1912 the new clubhouse opened on the pier head of Muelle Alfonso XII. For decades the club was central to Cartagena's nautical and social life; in 1965 another building was added beside the original to meet growing space needs. The historic building fell into ruin, closed in 1985, was listed as Bien de Interés Cultural in 1988, and after a 2001 fire and demolitions in 2001/2002 left the pier. Since 2000 the club has continued in a new building by the marina and remains a symbol of Cartagena's nautical culture.
