Portimão, Portugal

History

Clube Naval de Portimão was founded on 8 October 1960 with the initial aim of promoting nautical sports and supporting the local community linked to the sea. Portimão, with its port and proximity to the Atlantic, always had a strong maritime connection, and the club was created to bring together those interested in activities such as sailing, sport fishing and canoeing. CNP played a crucial role in developing and popularising nautical sports in Portimão and throughout the Algarve region. Over the decades, the club became a reference in organising sailing, canoeing and other nautical competitions, while also promoting nautical tourism as an important economic pillar of the region. The club is located on the Rio Arade in a privileged area for nautical sports and has a recreational marina with berths afloat and ashore for members, plus several training and initiation schools for children and adults in dinghy sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayak polo and surfing. Numerous events and competitions have been organised through the club over the years. In recent years, Clube Naval de Portimão has strengthened its community ties through initiatives such as the Projeto Náutica nas Escolas, in partnership with the Municipality of Portimão and Agrupamento de Escolas Poeta António Aleixo, giving 5th and 6th year pupils the opportunity to learn sailing and canoeing during physical education classes in 90-minute sessions over a semester. The club also collaborates with several municipalities on summer sports holidays, offering nautical activities for children and young people. Presidents of the club have included Dr Manuel Bentes (1960–1963), Luis Bordas Marimon (1964–1965), Francisco Mendes Furtado (1966–1967), Jose dos Reis Ramos (1968–1969, again 1989–1990), Eng. Alvo (1970–1971), Dr Luis Catarino (1972–1973), Antonio Vasco de Melo (1974–1976), Dr Antonio Feu (1977–1982), Eng Nuno Mergulhão (1983–1988), Eng Domingos de Sousa (1989–1990), Baptista Barão Carneiro (1991–1992), Eng João Teixeira (1993–1994), Emilio Vidigal (1995–1996) and João Vieira (1997–2012). Today, Clube Naval de Portimão is a driver of sporting, educational and social development, helping to consolidate Portimão as a destination of excellence for sea-related activities.
