History
Club Náutico Puerto Sherry was founded in 2009 with the aim of developing high-level competition and major nautical events with wide social impact. The club is located in the eponymous Marina Puerto Sherry in the north of the Bahía de Cádiz and uses a 167-metre asphalt beach, the largest in Spain and one of the longest in the world. Since its foundation it has promoted sailing and organised prestigious regattas, including international Flying Dutchman championships and the Optimist Excellence Cup. Classic sailing with the Copa de España de Vela Clásica – Memorial Pedro Bores was initiated by Pedro Bores; since 2011 the Semana Clásica is held in even years at Puerto Sherry and in odd years in Monaco. Puerto Sherry is a reference marina for classic yachts in southern Europe. Since September 2023 the club has new facilities on Playa Asfáltica: a hall of over 300 m² with classroom, changing rooms, showers, toilets, equipment storage and rest area for the sailing school and summer camp. Racing teams compete nationally and internationally in Optimist, 420, windsurf (Techno 293 and iQFOiL), catamaran (Class A and Formula 18) and J/80; club sailors have represented Spain at national, international and Olympic events. In 2025 the club organised the Flying Dutchman World Championship with 61 boats from eight countries in the Bahía de Cádiz, having previously hosted the 2024 European Championship. Valle de la Riva presides over the board and emphasises the club's mission to promote water sports, organise regattas and train young sailors through the Escuela de Vela.
