Real Club Náutico C.A.S. de Ceuta
Real Club Náutico C.A.S. de Ceuta is a versatile nautical sports club based in the Dársena Deportiva of the autonomous city of Ceuta on the Strait of Gibraltar. The club offers cruising and dinghy sailing, windsurfing, offshore fishing, boat and kayak fishing, spearfishing and diving in all modalities, and promotes its facilities for water sports in Ceuta. Infrastructure includes a social lounge, restaurant, marine aquarium, multimedia course room, cylinder filling station, sailing, diving and kayak sections, and a maintenance workshop. Youth and beginner programmes include light sailing and windsurf courses as well as scuba baptisms; regattas such as Interclubs del Estrecho and the regional dinghy regatta shape the sporting calendar. A distinctive feature is the long maritime tradition, including the underwater placement of the Virgen del Carmen since 1957 and the award of the “Real” title by the Royal Household.
History
Club Náutico C.A.S. de Ceuta is a traditional water sports club in Ceuta. As early as 1957, club divers placed the image of the Virgen del Carmen underwater – a custom still continued at the annual festivities. The club maintains sections for sailing, diving, kayak, fishing and windsurfing and operates among other craft the club boat “Odyssee 2”. In December 2011 the city president of Ceuta wrote in support of the bid to become a Real Club Náutico. In May 2012 the club celebrated the granting of the “Real” title by the Royal Household with a ceremony for members and civil and military authorities. In 2012 Juan Jesús Vivas Lara unveiled a commemorative plaque for the Real title; founding members Salvador Fossati Ruiz, Federico Morey de Castro, Enrique González Carrasco and Juan Díaz Triano received a metope. Sportingly the club organised Interclubs regattas in the Strait (cruising and dinghies), the Ruta de los Fruteros with Real Club Náutico de Estepona, Christmas spearfishing trophies, and youth courses in light sailing and windsurf under Manuel Calleja and club instructors with certification from the Real Federación Española de Vela. The spearfishing team finished fourth at the 2010 Spanish club championship. Under president Manuel García Durán the club also expanded social offerings and partnerships, including with CSIC marine biology and the Naval Command.
