Circolo Velico Reggio
Circolo Velico Reggio is the official sailing club of Reggio Calabria and has been a sporting hub on the Strait of Messina since 1982. The club site is at Rada delle Mura Greche and the historic Rada Giunchi on the Lungomare, offering sailing, windsurfing, rowing and summer camps for children and young people. The programme includes a sailing school, individual and group courses for children from age six and for adults, inclusive sailing under the motto Vela per Tutti, and member benefits such as Wi-Fi, showers and beach facilities. The club organises international regattas such as the Mediterranean Cup and Italian championships and shapes sailing in Calabria through its Optimist tradition and racing section.
History
Circolo Velico Reggio was founded on 16 September 1982 by notarial deed of notary Andrea Zagami. Initiated by a group of competitive sailing enthusiasts around Carlo Colella, Mimì Caputi and Alfredo Nicolò — soon joined by Silvestro Zagarella, Francesco Bagnato, Francesco De Gaetano, Claudio Vadalà, Enzo De Lorenzo and Giorgio Brigante — the aim was to create, with the first Optimist group, a sporting reference point for sailing in the heart of Reggio Calabria at Rada Giunchi in front of the Lungomare. The first club address was the Lido Comunale; already in 1984 the club moved into today's premises in the historic Bagni Musolino bathhouse on Via Marina. Renovation work was carried out by the founding members on a voluntary basis; the inauguration involved sporting and civic authorities of the time. The first president was Carlo Colella. The club colours and the flag with a maroon cross and the initials CVR on a white field — resembling the shield of the city patron San Giorgio — have since been present on racing courses in Australia, America and throughout Europe. Twinnings with Yadro Kopper in Slovenia and Yong Sail Club in Malta underline the international outlook. Since 1985 the club has organised the Mediterranean Cup, an international regatta that in October and November brings sailors from many nations to Reggio Calabria. In 2011 the Circolo received the CONI bronze Stella al merito for sporting and social activity. In 2014 a club redevelopment project was launched. Today the association is a meeting point for adults and children, hosts national and international championships and, with Rosalba Giordano, selected the first Italian athlete for the 2023 Esports Olympic Games in Singapore.
