Circolo Nautico Torre del Greco
Circolo Nautico Torre del Greco has been a maritime club at the eastern end of the port of Torre del Greco in the Gulf of Naples since 1955, with a unique view of Vesuvius and the Vesuvian coast. The club combines tradition, sailing and coastal rowing and runs a year-round sailing school for children, juniors and adults aged 7 to 99 on Optimist, ILCA 7 and 420 dinghies. The L'approdo marina offers water and electricity, an illuminated pier, video surveillance, technical assistance, showers, bar and restaurant, plus year-round guest berths as an alternative to the tourist ports of Sorrento, Capri, Naples and Amalfi. The club organises prestigious regattas such as the Trofeo Sulle Rotte dei Borbone, links sport with cultural and environmental programmes, and has around 350 members; it belongs to the Comitato Circoli Velici Napoletani and the Comitato Vele di Levante.
History
Circolo Nautico Torre del Greco stands at the eastern tip of the port of Torre del Greco, a city whose wealth has always come from the sea—from coral fishing and seafaring to shipbuilding. The idea of a nautical club arose in 1955 when a group of enthusiasts took over a small state concession at the port entrance from Polisportiva Turris. On 6 June 1955 Giovanni Cimmino, Basilio Liverino, Tommaso Borrelli, Gennaro Russo, Costantino Rivieccio, Giuseppe Venditti, Antonio Accardo and others met to form the Circolo Nautico Rari Nantes Turris; Giovanni Cimmino was the first president, followed by Tommaso Borrelli and Francesco De Vivo. In 1961, led by former mayor Francesco Coscia, members relaunched Circolo Nautico Turris with new practical ambitions; over the following years a functional and elegant clubhouse was built and is still in use. The club has 350 registered members and belongs to the Comitato Circoli Velici Napoletani and Comitato Vele di Levante. It hosts many sporting and cultural events, including the historic offshore regatta Sulle Rotte dei Borbone, FIV instructor courses and national youth regattas; in 2012, during the Under-19 National Championships, special tours combined sailing with the culinary and artistic traditions of the Vesuvian coast. The quay beside the club recalls the 1969 Antarctic expedition: from here the motorsailer San Giuseppe Due, built in Torre del Greco under Giovanni Ajmone Cat, set sail—a story celebrated in a book and a dedicated berth.
