Club für Wassersport Porz e.V. 1926

Club für Wassersport Porz e.V. 1926 is a long-established multi-discipline water sports club in Cologne-Porz-Zündorf on the Groov leisure island on the Rhine (river kilometre 677.3, right bank). The club grounds feature a modern clubhouse, a private harbour with jetties and a slipway, plus a restaurant with beer garden. The rowing and sailing/motorboat (SeMo) sections use club-owned boats; youth sailing training covers Optimist, Teeny, 420er and Pirat on the Groov and the Rhine. In addition to rowing taster and beginner courses, the club offers pleasure craft licence training, skipper training, guest berths and a lively programme of tours and social events. Registered on 8 November 1926, the CfWP is among the oldest water sports clubs in Cologne-Porz and combines sport, training and community under one roof.

History

Under register number 71, Club für Wassersport Porz e.V. 1926 was entered in the Cologne-Mülheim association register on 8 November 1926. Founded for paddling, rowing and sailing, the club began in the Lindenhof hall in Porz (owner Peter Körfer). At first, 18 members paddled on the Rhine. In 1927 Körfer, through contacts with P. Mülhens (4711) at Schloss Röttgen, enabled the purchase of the first two coxed fours, named “Ohm Jupp” and “Freier Rhein”; Körfer became an honorary member. Membership rose to 36 names and an annual rowing distance of 3,000 km was recorded; cellars were converted into a boathouse. From 1936 the club took part in racing and founded a tennis section. In 1943 about 70 percent of the boats were destroyed, remaining boats were walled into the Lindenhof cellar and rowing ceased. From 1945 a handful of members sought new premises and found the disused brewery cellar of the former Immendorf land brewery above Rosenhügel on the Zündorf Rhine arm. Between 1946 and 1948 about 500 m³ of earth were moved, the path to the rowing jetty was built and rooms for boats, showers, toilets and changing rooms were created. A lease with the municipality of Porz became a transfer agreement in 1951. In 1961 the foundation stone of today’s clubhouse was laid; it was inaugurated in 1963. More recently, harbour renovation and reopening in 2020/2021 and the forthcoming centenary in 2026 mark the club’s development.
