Club Náutico Santa Lucía
Club Náutico Santa Lucía is a long-established sports club in the port of Cartagena in the Region of Murcia, founded in 1946. The club is located on Paseo del Muelle and uses the Cartagena harbour basin year-round as training water for rowing and dragon boat. Its programme includes Mediterranean llaut and falucho rowing, dragon boat, sport fishing and an outdoor gym overlooking the harbour; the summer school also teaches children dinghy sailing, kayaking and water games. The club supports beginners and competitive athletes, organises regattas and competes regionally, nationally and internationally. Notable achievements include national dragon-boat titles, the world club championship in Mar-Costa sport fishing, and the success of beach-sprint rower Blanca López Valera.
History
Club Náutico Santa Lucía was founded in 1946 and is rooted in the Santa Lucía district by Cartagena harbour. Over the decades it became a fixture of water sports in the Region of Murcia, focusing on traditional rowing (llaut and falucho), dragon boat and sport fishing. The dragon-boat team won the Liga Nacional de Dragón Boat in 2021 and 2022, the 2023 Spanish Dragon Boat Championship over 200 m DB12 in Madrid's Parque del Buen Retiro, and the 1ª Copa Liga DB – Mar Menor Games in San Pedro del Pinatar; regionally it won the Liga Regional in 2019, 2022 and 2023. In May 2026 the veteran crews reached Final B for the first time at the Spanish Mediterranean Llaut Championship (mixed sixth, men eighth in Spain). In June 2026 the club, with team Vientos de Cartagena and the Región de Murcia Canoeing Federation, organised the III Regional Dragon Boat Regatta and IV International BCS Festival at Cola de Ballena and won several gold medals. The sport-fishing team of Francisco Salas, Antonio Nicolás, Alejandro Ruiz, Juan Carlos Cánovas Gil, David Alcántara and Juan Cánovas Miras became world club champions in Mar-Costa (surfcasting); Juan Cánovas Miras also led the individual world ranking. Youth rowing is marked by Blanca López Valera, the youngest Murcian rower to medal at a Spanish championship and join the national team, competing in beach sprint towards Los Angeles 2028. Under president Diego F. Varela Formoso the club works with Cartagena City Council and the Port Authority and runs a summer school with nautical activities for children.
