Club Náutico de Jávea
Club Náutico de Jávea is a long-established sports and social club on the bay of Jávea (Xàbia) on the Costa Blanca in the province of Alicante. The club is located at Muelle Norte in the harbour and offers a boatyard with a travelift of up to 50 tonnes, pontoons, a clubhouse with lounge, swimming pool, gym, sauna and a sailing school. Its programme includes race teams in Optimist and ILCA 4, cruiser racing under ORC, rowing and sport fishing, plus youth development through the Liga Interescolar and the Escuela Deportiva. Each year members organise events such as Semana de la Vela, the Regata Clásicos Comunitat Valenciana and the Trofeo Picudos. Founded in 1958, the club has become a fixture of the Valencian sailing scene and has repeatedly been awarded the Blue Flag.
History
The site of Club Náutico Jávea is closely linked to the Levante breakwater: the project began in 1949, the contract was awarded in 1952, and works were completed by 1973. The first club premises were occupied in 1958 under an agreement with the Sociedad de Salvamento de Náufragos; Jaime Cruañes Cholbi was president and Juan Crespo Ruaño secretary. In 1964 the club obtained its administrative concession, a new clubhouse and a first pontoon; under Federico Noreña Echeverría membership grew quickly. By the 1970s members numbered in the hundreds: the sailing-school building, new entrance, infirmary and secretariat were created. In the 1980s berths were expanded and the fleet renewed; storms such as that of 1981 damaged pontoons and the harbour promenade. From 1990 under José Salinas major works followed: in 1994 a new boatyard with travel-lift and cranes, in 1996 extension of pontoons 2–4, in 1998/99 expansion of lounge and restaurant, and in 1998 the 25th anniversary of Semana de la Vela. In late 2001 pontoon 3 sank after a storm; a new floating pontoon soon followed. In 2006 the club hosted the IX Copa de S.M. el Rey (offshore fishing) and in 2008 the first World Club Championship in offshore fishing. Arturo Miquel Bartual has been president since October 2006. The club continues to promote sailing, fishing and youth training and has repeatedly received the Blue Flag.
