Sociedade Club Náutico de Foz
Club Náutico de Foz is a non-profit water sports association in Foz on the Galician ría coast in the province of Lugo. Since its founding on 21 October 1980, the club has promoted water sports as well as social and cultural activities related to the sea. The sailing school has trained between 150 and 200 participants each year since 1990 in Optimist, Cadet, 420 and Vaurien, and also offers cruising courses. The clubhouse on the second floor of the CENIMA building and the Pañol in Portochico marina on Avenida da Riveira provide a cafeteria, social rooms, offices, a terrace and storage for racing and school boats. The club has around 200 to 250 full members, supports active youth development aimed at young racing sailors and takes part in regional, national and international regattas.
History
Club Náutico de Foz was founded on 21 October 1980 at ten o'clock in the Chabola de Saturno in the port of Foz by thirteen neighbours who wanted to create a sports and cultural association linked to the sea. In 1981 the first general assembly was held, statutes were approved and Fernando González López was confirmed as the first president; monthly membership then cost 200 pesetas. That same year the first boat was purchased and the rowing team was created, competing successfully in Galicia and Asturias. In 1982 the club was granted use of the former salting factory on the fishermen's riverside, which founding members renovated with considerable financial effort and treasury bonds into a clubhouse with cafeteria, kitchen, office, terrace and three social halls. During the 1980s sections for kayaking, windsurfing and sailing were established; the club joined the Galician Sailing Federation and organised the first windsurfing regatta. The presidency changed in 1986; in 1989 a management committee under Francisco Luis Fernandez Rego took over, and Ramón Candía Rego was elected in March 1989. From 1995 under President Teodoro Moreda Fernandez the premises were recovered for the club; a squash court was built in 1997 and management of the pontoons in Puerto chico was secured in 1998. The diving section was founded in 1999 and the first racing team entered the Liga Norte de Vela. In 2000 Portos de Galicia granted the new warehouse as a Pañol for the sailing school and nautical activities. Between 2001 and 2003 the team won the Liga Norte de Vela three years in a row; two Optimist sailors joined the Galician squad for the Spanish championship. Three new 420 boats were acquired in 2003. After lengthy negotiations with the town council, an agreement on the future clubhouse was signed on 27 February 2008. In February 2010 Minister Elena Espinosa opened the CENIMA building, whose second floor has housed the clubhouse ever since. The sailing school became a central offering from 1990 with accredited instructors; since 2000 the diving school has operated in cooperation with PADI-certified instructors. The club continues to organise social events such as the traditional Centollada, excursions, regattas at regional and national level and supports youth development in racing sailing.
