Clube Náutico de Almada

Clube Náutico de Almada (CNA) is a non-profit sports, cultural and recreational association on the left bank of the Tagus in Cacilhas, Almada, recognised as an Institution of Public Utility by the Portuguese state. As the only club in Almada dedicated to sailing and canoeing, it connects the local population with the Tagus and has around 300 active members. Since its founding on 9 April 1975, the club has operated from Cais do Ginjal, Cais do Olho de Boi and now Largo Alfredo Diniz; in 2011 and 2012 its current facilities were developed as part of riverside regeneration with support from Câmara Municipal de Almada. The year-round sailing school offers courses for children and adults in classes such as Optimist, Laser, Vaurien, Europe and Dart, led by certified coaches from the Federação Portuguesa de Vela. Regattas such as Encontro Sul do Tejo, summer holiday programmes for young people aged 8 to 15, and cruising and recreational sailing shape club life on the Tagus opposite Lisbon.

History

Clube Náutico de Almada (CNA) was founded on 9 April 1975 and began its activities at Cais do Ginjal on the left bank of the Tagus. The club later moved to Cais do Olho de Boi, further downstream. Today it operates in Cacilhas at Largo Alfredo Diniz (Alex). CNA is a non-profit sports, cultural and recreational association aimed at developing nautical activities in general and especially sailing and canoeing. Recognised as an Institution of Public Utility, it is the only club in Almada dedicated to sailing and canoeing, providing one of the few links between the population and the Tagus. With around 300 active members, CNA has become a fixture of the local watersports scene. In 2011 and 2012 the club completed a project to prepare and use its current facilities and equipment as part of the recovery and revitalisation of the Cacilhas waterfront under the Parcerias para a Regeneração Urbana programme, with support from Câmara Municipal de Almada. Its Escola de Vela is active all year; more than a thousand sailors have been trained there, some competing in the national ranking in Optimist, Europe, Laser, Vaurien and Dart. The club regularly organises regattas including Encontro Sul do Tejo for Optimist, Laser and Vaurien classes, holiday programmes and social events such as the Arraial de São João.
